When it is purple, the ruby receives the name of  <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">balaje<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the Royal Academy, this word comes from Arabic and refers to a region in Asia where the stones come from. One of the most interesting stories surrounding this gemstone is that of the balaj ruby from the  <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black Prince,  <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Edward of Woodstock, Prince of Wales, who currently sits on the British crown. The story is full of twists and turns of events that are difficult to verify, but it would seem that the stone ended up in the hands of the English prince after he had supported the Castilian king Peter I &#8220;The Cruel&#8221; in the civil war against his half-brother Henry II of Trastamara. Peter I, for his part, would have ended up taking possession of the stone after executing Muhammad VI &#8220;the Red King&#8221;, who was fleeing from Muhammad V whom Peter I supported in his reconquest of the Caliphate of Granada.
