18K white gold ring with sapphire and diamonds

From Latin sapphirùs , which in turn derives from the Greek σάπφειρος ( sappheiros ), which in turn comes from the Hebrew S apir (ספיר) meaning neat, sapphire belongs to the same family of minerals as ruby, i.e. corundum. All other colors of corundum besides ruby are called sapphire, including the colorless ones known as leuco-sapphires. There are yellow, orange, green and violet sapphires. A very famous variety is the “padparadscha” which is a variety whose color resembles “a lotus flower at sunset”. That said, when we simply say “sapphire” we mean the blue variety, which is the most famous and appreciated. The different colors are produced by different types of impurities. In the case of blue sapphires the color is due to the presence of iron and titanium.

Very typical of sapphire is the so-called colour zoning. Colour zoning is a phenomenon that refers to variations in the intensity, distribution and colour patterns in a gemstone that can create effects, a phenomenon that we can clearly observe in the sapphire in our ring and that adds even more beauty to it.
