From the French “art décoratif,” Art Deco was an architectural, artistic, and design style that characterized the period between 1920 and the beginning of World War II in 1939, representing luxury, glamour, zest for life, and faith in progress. It was a modern style influenced by the artistic avant-garde and combined diverse motifs, from the Ballets Russes to Oriental art and, following the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922, Egyptian themes.
