Its history dates back to 1839 when Antoni Norbert Patek and his Polish compatriot Franciszek Czapek, after emigrating from Poland following the fall of the November Uprising against Russian rule, founded Patek, Czapek & Cie in Switzerland.

In 1844 Patek, Czapek & Cie was dissolved due to differences between the partners and in 1845 Antoni Patek entered into partnership with Jean-Adrien Philippe, a French watchmaker who in 1844 invented the keyless time setting system for which he was awarded a prize and which he patented in 1845. In 1851 they renamed the company Patek, Philippe & Cie – Fabricants à Genève, a name that survives to this day.
