Owning a natural diamond is like owning a piece of Earth’s history. Formed in processes that lasted between 1 and 3.3 billion years in the Earth’s mantle under extreme pressure and temperature, the age of diamonds corresponds to between 75% and 25% of the Earth’s age. From the Ancient Greek ἀδάμας (adámas) Meaning “own,” “unalterable,” “unbreakable,” or “untamable,” the diamond is one of the most stable forms of carbon and the hardest and most thermally conductive mineral known to humankind. It is believed that the Hindus were the first to recognize and mine them over 3,000 years ago, using them as religious icons in the form of loose, unpolished stones. As the hardest mineral in existence, it is no surprise that its use as an engraving tool dates back to the early history of humanity. However, diamond cutting in jewelry did not evolve until the 15th century, when the grinding wheel was invented and it was discovered that only one diamond could cut another, leading to the creation of facets. Before this time, diamonds, which began to be used in jewelry around the 11th century, were used in their rough state or with minimal polishing before being set in jewelry.

The current brilliant cut was developed by the engineer Marcel Tolkowsky in 1919 and is heir to the Antique European carving (“Old European cut”) and the Antique mine cushion (“old mine cut” or “old miner” in English) both evolutions of carving Peruzzi and the MazarinAll of these cuts were developed throughout the 18th century and are more square than round. With 58 facets, like its two predecessors, what distinguishes the brilliant cut is its perfectly round shape and proportions designed to bring out the maximum possible brilliance of the gem.
