The cost of natural sapphires varies according to their color, clarity, size and overall quality. The origin of a sapphire does not guarantee its quality as each mine produces a wide range of quality but usually Kashmir receives the highest premium although Burma, Sri Lanka and Madagascar also produce large quantities of high quality gems. In addition to clarity, the most important thing is the color, which should be neither too light nor too dark, the most appreciated being sometimes known as “royal blue” or “royal blue”. Many of the sapphires on the market are heat-treated to enhance their color, so untreated deep-colored specimens are the most expensive.

As an interesting fact we can add that sapphires began to be synthesized by the Verneuil process since 1902 and that from the forties they began to be manufactured in the United States in large quantities, being a very characteristic feature of the jewelry of the time, the presence of synthetic rubies and sapphires.
