“Emerald Green” is an expression we often hear to describe a very beautiful intense green color, however when we delve into the world of gemstones, we realize that on a descriptive level, it is not entirely accurate as there are emeralds of varying shades and intensities. The first emeralds known to the ancient world probably came from Sikait or Sikit, an archaeological site that includes the mining complex of the Mons Smaragdus (Emerald Mountain) and three rock temples in the Eastern Desert of Egypt in what is now Wadi el-Gamal National Park in the Red Sea Governorate. The Mons Smaragdus was the only emerald mining area exploited on a large scale during the Roman Empire and it is believed that Cleopatra claimed ownership of some of the mines that belonged to the Greeks because she was a great lover of the gem that symbolized fertility and rebirth. The emerald in the ancient world is full of legends such as that of the emperor Nero who is said to have had a monocle to watch gladiator fights according to Pliny the Elder in his Natural HistoryIt is said that the Hindus offered emeralds to the God Krishna to receive knowledge of the soul and eternity, or that the Arab astrologers, heirs of the Greeks, related the emerald to the planet Venus. That said, it is important to note that the emeralds used in Egypt and Rome were not of the best quality and were generally quite opaque.

Today, the main producers of gem-quality emeralds are Colombia and Zambia, although other countries such as Brazil, Zimbabwe, India, Russia and Afghanistan, among others, also produce them. The most famous by far are the Colombian ones, which have a different formation process and a characteristic color, the mint green which makes them the most valued and appreciated.
