Rubies, of the corundum family, are named for their color and are the only corundum with a unique name as all other colors are called sapphires. From rubeus in Latin meaning “red”, the word ruby comes from the Latin word rubīnus which in turn derives from the Spanish word rubín of which it is synonymous. It owes its color to the metals iron and chromium with which it is associated. Fluorescence is the luminescence produced by certain minerals when exposed to the action of certain rays such as ultraviolet rays. An interesting peculiarity about rubies is that, natural or synthetic, they always fluoresce although their fluorescence patterns are different and the synthetic one has more than the natural one. Another interesting fact is that rubies were among the first gems to be synthesized. The Verneuil process, named after the French chemist Auguste Verneuil, was the first commercial method of synthetic gemstone manufacturing and was developed in 1902. The process, also called flame fusionconsists of melting a finely pulverized substance with an oxyhydrogen flame and then dropping the drops that crystallize on a corundum seed that directs the growth. Natural rubies are highly prized and expensive because it is difficult to find large gems, which made synthetic rubies very popular, for example, in the 1940s and 1950s. Nowadays, synthetics are still used in watchmaking, but in jewelry, natural ones are preferred, as is the case of our ring.

The marquise or marquise carving is a carving considered among the so-called “fancy carvings” and has an elliptical shape with pointed ends. Legend has it that it was commissioned by King Louis XV for his mistress the Marquise Madame Pompadour in the 18th century and is inspired by her smile.
