We present our 18 karat gold ring with Japanese Arita porcelain button representing one of the seven Japanese Gods of Fortune, a vintage piece that takes us back to the 70’s with its colorful and eclecticism.
Japan’s seven gods of fortune refer to a group of folk deities whose origins are from Indian, Chinese and Japanese gods of fortune folklore. Collectively, they are called 七福 Shichi Fukujin, and at the jewelry level they were fashionable in the 1970s.
The button on this ring specifically represents Bishamonten. Originally from India, where he is known as Benzaiten, Bishamonten is the god of warriors and the punisher of evildoers. He is one of the four guardians of Buddhism (shitennou) and is often depicted with a serious face, wearing armor (in the ring we can see the helmet), with a weapon in one hand and a pagoda in the other.
The name “from Arita” or “Imari”, which is often used when talking about these buttons, refers to Arita, the Japanese town where the porcelain was produced, and to the neighboring port city of Imari, from where it was exported abroad.
