Founded in 1920, Tous was originally a watchmaking workshop that began a small-scale production of personalized jewelry in 1970. The name tourmaline comes from the Sinhalese word “touramalli,” meaning “mixed-colored stones,” or from the Sinhalese word “turamali,” meaning “stone that attracts ashes,” referring to the mineral’s pyroelectric properties. When heated, it attracts straw, ash, or small pieces of wood. It is the name of a family of minerals with a very complex chemical formula that occurs in many colors. Currently, about 40 species of tourmaline are recognized, including: Achroite, the colorless variety, plover the black variety, dravite the brown variety, but which is also sometimes used to describe dark yellow ones, indicolite, the blue color variety, verdelite the green one, elbaíta the rose, rubellite the red one and Paraiba a highly prized and expensive electric blue variety that is only found in Brazil, among others.
