Technically, rubies and pink sapphires are corundums that owe their color to the presence of chromium. According to wikipedia “In general, gem quality corundum in all shades of red, including pink, is called ruby. However, in the United States, a minimum color saturation must be met to be called ruby; otherwise, the stone will be called pink sapphire.” This is how the GIA, the “The Gemological Institute of America, while acknowledging historical and cultural variations in the red-pink color divide, classifies as rubies only those corundum gems with a dominant red hue.
