According to Pliny the Elder, a Roman historian and military man of the 1st century, the name Topaz derives from the island of Topazos. in the Red Sea, however the deposits found on this island are of olivine or peridot, a different gem sometimes confused with topaz. The word could also come from Sanskrit tapaz which means fire and would be related to the deep orange variety. Various impurities can produce the different shades sometimes found in nature which can be pink, orange, lilac or blue for example, however most topaz in its natural state is pale yellow, brown or colorless with a white or grayish hue. The rarest and most valuable color is the color known as imperial topaz or precious topaz. Imperial topaz comprises shades ranging from golden yellow to orange pink and owes its name to the 17th century Russian czars who claimed exclusive rights to all gems of these shades mined in Russia. Blue however is the most popular shade on the market. Natural blue topaz exists in nature but its color is very faint so the blue topaz on the market are all heat treated to produce a more desirable dark blue.
