Emerald, along with aquamarine, morganite, and heliodor among others, belongs to the beryl family, a family of minerals that produces beautiful and long-lasting gems in a wide variety of colors, with emerald being the most famous and appreciated. Known for centuries, it is said to have been Cleopatra’s favorite gemstone and has been associated with the goddess Venus, rebirth, love and fertility. One of the most characteristic features of the gemstone are the so called “gardens”, a sort of drawings created in its interior by the numerous inclusions that are often found in the gemstone and that are the result of its formation and temperature changes in the process. An excess of inclusions can weaken the stone, since although beryl is one of the hardest minerals, inclusions create areas where the emerald can break. This is why it is a gem that is worked with special care in jewelry workshops, for which the octagonal cut was created to protect the corners and why the oil treatment that fills the inclusions protecting the gem is widely spread, accepted and legal. The most famous emeralds are the Colombian ones, which, unlike the rest, are formed by processes of evaporation of sea salts and have a bluish-green color that sets them apart from the rest. Another country that produces high quality emeralds is Zambia, which produces gems of great quality and clarity and are characterized by a forest green color known as “forest green”.
