Long confused with nephrite jade, jadeite comes primarily from Burma (Myanmar) and is a distinct mineral with a different chemical composition. Until 1836, it was considered the same mineral as nephrite and included under the term “ jade,” which referred to both. The most prized is Imperial Jadeite , a semi-transparent emerald-green variety.

It should be noted here that the stones the Spanish observed were most likely jadeite and not nephrite, since the variety of jade found in Central America is jadeite, not nephrite, of which there are only deposits in Brazil.
