In this process, small defects are created by inclusions of elements foreign to the composition of the stone, which are called “gardens” because they resemble moss or foliage. Although it enjoys a very high hardness on the Mohs scale, due to the multiple inclusions that are characteristic of it, the emerald is a delicate gemstone that must be treated with special care. For this reason, it is often treated with some type of oil, usually cedar oil, which acts as a protective agent by filling its cracks and improving visibility and gloss.
